FB Bird of the Day December 19, 2011… Barred Owl

Sunday, despite only getting 90 minutes of sleep, I joined fellow birders Greg Neise, Randy L. Shonkwiler and Larry Krutulis for the LIsle / Morton CBC (Christmas Bird Count). Our goal was to census the birds within a small area of the southern Cook County Forest Preserve. We were rewarded with hearing or seeing 17 owls of 4 species for the day, including today’s bird of the day, this Barred Owl. When I photographed this bird at 459am Sunday morning, we had already heard both Northern Saw-whet Owl and Eastern Screech Owl. It was a most rewarding morning of owling, and seeing a Barred Owl in Cook County is always a treat, though I think there are more in southern Cook County than people realize, they are just awfully shy. This bird NEVER called, we just happened to see it fly in and managed to get a spot light on it so I could take this photo.
